The XIIIth International Symposium on Retinal Degenerations will be held in Emeishan, Sichuan, China on September 18 - 23, 2008. The venue is the Hong Zhu Shan Hotel. In choosing this site, we wanted a comfortable facility where the scientific presentations could be held, where all attendees could be housed and where all meals could be provided. Such facilities allow the sequestering of all attendees for maximum interaction during the time of the meeting. These conditions are amply met at the Hong Zhu Shan Hotel.

An exciting scientific program on all aspects of retinal degeneration is being organized for the meeting. As in the past, the program will include both poster and platform presentations. The platform sessions will be organized around specific themes and talks will be selected from abstracts submitted by participants. We anticipate that the themes will include "Molecular and genetic mechanisms in photoreceptor degeneration", "Age-related macular degeneration", "New diagnostic techniques for retinal degenerations". "Neuroprotection in the prevention of retinal degeneration", "Gene therapy and the correction of gene defects", as well as other emerging topics that may develop over the next few months. Platform presentations will be scheduled for 20 minutes each, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Those individuals not selected for a platform presentation are invited to bring a poster. Posters will be available for viewing throughout the meeting, and there will be several sessions completely devoted to poster viewing.

Three Special Lectures will be a feature of our scientific program at RD2008. We have invited Glen Prusky, PhD to give one lecture. Dr. Prusky works on visual perception, plasticity, and means to quantify spatial vision in rodents and will give a talk entitled "Measures of Vision in Rodents as a Tool for Evaluating the Treatment of Retinal Degenerative Disease". The second lecture will be given by Peter Campochiaro, MD, entitled "Oxidative Damage and Retinal Degenerations". Dr. Campochiaro is a clinician-scientist at the Wilmer Institute (Johns Hopkins). Kang Zhang, MD, PhD a clinician-scientist at the Moral Eye Center (Utah) will give the third lecture entitled "Molecular Genetics of Macular Degeneration: From Stargardt Disease to Age Related Macular Degeneration".

Each RD2008 attendee is encouraged to submit a chapter to the Proceedings Volume. Author instructions and information on how/where to format your chapter will be made available later.

We also have planned an exciting program for accompanying persons.

For location, travel, weather, attire and other general meeting information, be sure to see the Emeishan Information Section.

We are excited about the RD2008 meeting and look forward to seeing you there.
